--- The destruction of Sorb villages in the Lausitz region of eastern Germany by the Swedish state is an outrageous violation of the spirit of European integration and severely damages Sweden's world-wide reputation for enlightened environmental protection and human rights policies. --- The planned continuation of the compulsory resettlement policy of the totalitarian GDR regime by the Swedish state-owned Vattenfall Company highlights once more the urgent need to bring brown-coal strip-mining to an end. --- The brown-coal business is, in highly parasitic. It lives off the despoliation of the countryside, the destruction of rural life and the havoc wrecked on the lives of old people, who are its most tragic victims. The strip-mining of brown coal appears to be profitable only because its ecological follow-up costs are borne by the general public and its human costs are wilfully ignored. --- The fact that Vattenfall insists on the destruction of Horno, although the bypassing of the village by the mine is technically and financially feasible, testifies to the hypocrisy of a state concern that proudly boasts of its ethical principles, only then to flagrantly breech them. (Report and Accounts 2000 (Environment Policy): "( ) We protect nature and focus on human health and safety. In accordance with our core values, our actions are characterized by respect for the cultures, customs and values of the countries where we operate" www.vattenfall.com) --- Following liberalization of the European electricity market, consumers throughout Europe are now able to choose their suppliers from a variety of producers who generate electricity on a sustainable, environment-compatible basis without destroying the basis of life of current and future generations. --- The Horno Alliance calls upon Vattenfall customers throughout Europe to switch to other suppliers (for alternatives see: www.greenprices.com). --- > |
